Nicholas J. Marshall
Nick was born in Providence, R I and graduated from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA. He joined the military as a USAF officer and spent 7 years of active duty talking to pilots of jet fighters telling them where to go, how fast to go and how high to go. Think military version of FAA controller, AKA a scope dope. It is a rather stressful occupation but it taught focus and how to present the ‘appearance’ of calm. Then came MBA and CPA designations, followed by 30 plus years in the business world as a Financial controller, Corporate treasurer and also H R director. The first 20 years in the business world along with the Air Force years presented the philosophy that success equals what used to be called ‘Completed Staff Work’. The term meant essentially that one accomplished a given task via a detailed and hands-on method of supervision AND with no assistance from the above chain of command. The relation to supervisors was to determine or be given a problem, use subordinates to solve the problem, then report the successful resolution to the supervisor. In short, his supervisory method was to direct people in their tasks. There was rarely a give and take up or down the chain of command. The last 11 years in business were with a high-tech fiber optic company with a dramatically different philosophical shift in problem solving approach. Here subordinates became team members and actively contributed to the creative solutions. Both superiors and co-workers encouraged and participated in the creative solution. It was the beginning of openness in Nick’s daily life personally and professionally. Through it all he developed a part time accounting business to help pay for his children’s colleges and weddings. Also, through it all, there came to be three novels, a comedy, MAE DAYS, a spiritual drama, SONGBIRD, THE BOOK OF REBECCA and a serial killer mystery, BAD BOY. And finally, over the last several years, he has embarked on the spiritual journey of a lifetime with a teacher named Tracie.Along the way came 55 or so years of marriage to Carole and their 4 daughters and 6 grandchildren!
